The Challenge
Charlton Athletic wanted to enhance spectator safety and accessibility at The Valley, particularly for elderly and ambulant disabled fans navigating the radial stairways within the stands.
Traditional handrail solutions weren’t well-suited to the stadium’s existing infrastructure — they needed something that was both robust and retrofit-friendly, without compromising the visual identity or comfort of the seating environment. The challenge was clear: design and install a durable, modern handrail system that could seamlessly integrate with the stadium’s architecture while meeting the demands of busy matchdays.
The Solution: Ferco P-Rails
Ferco Seating provided the P-Rail system, a floor-mounted, steel handrail specifically engineered for stadium environments. The system was retrofitted beside the radial stairways at The Valley, offering an immediate improvement in safety and accessibility for supporters.

Performance and Compliance
The P-Rail uses the same proven steel sections found in Ferco’s rail seats and independent barriers, which meet Green Guide horizontal load requirements of 2kN/m and 1.5kN/m respectively (when appropriately installed). Although P-Rails are classed as service features rather than structural apparatus, they are built to the same high engineering standards, giving stadium operators confidence in their strength and reliability.
